However, for the estimated 8.5 million Texans - one in three residents - without reliable access to a car, the transportation network doesn't always offer the options to get to the places they want to travel. Persons with disabilities, older adults, and low-income Texans are among those most likely to confront these challenges.
As critically, the transportation network often doesn't work for those who drive. Traffic congestion, gas prices, and air quality concerns are prompting many who have cars to look for other ways to travel without getting in the car. Many live in neighborhoods and communities where other options to the car aren't safe, available, or accessible.
A nonprofit organization, Texas Citizen Fund has worked collaboratively with individuals, organizations, transit agencies, cities, counties, and others who want Texas communities that are safe and accessible for those who walk and use public transportation for more than a decade. While the transportation issues vary across a state as large and diverse as Texas, Texas Citizen Fund partners with those who are looking for constructive, tangible solutions to address and resolve these critical issues.
